Should I get Synthetic Turf?

If you are looking for reduced water landscaping you may have heard about synthetic grass and brushed right by it. Synthetic turf sometimes has a bad rap. Few can forget the smurf turf in the Boise State stadium. But synthetic is not just for the athletic or the large university with plenty of funding. Here are a few benefits that you will get from installing synthetic turf instead of the more traditional living sod in the Tualatin, OR area.

Benefits

  • Green year round: Turf doesn’t yellow or brown with age or heat. It doesn’t go dormant over the winter months. Your yard will look green and fresh all year whether it is the middle of a January snowstorm or a July heatwave.
  • Low Maintenance: It is synthetic and doesn’t rely on photosynthesis, so no sunlight and no watering required. Those pesky shadowed places in your yard that can’t support a blade of grass don’t bother the synthetic turf. And there is no high-water bill during the hot dry months. They are also great for use in places that are hard to get water to, like park strips or around trailers  where grass sprinklers aren’t a feasible option.
  • Pest free: Mole and gopher hills are unattractive and troublesome. When laying down turf it requires a 3”-6” layer of aggregate base for water to drain through. Add that to the fact that it is sheets of material it is a good barrier against pests.
  • Clean feet for pets: No mud paws running in and out. (Enough said)
  • Green materials: For those that are concerned about the environmental factor of synthetic products Some of the synthetic turf products use coconut shells as one of the manufacturing materials, and it is recyclable.
  • Save time and money: You may be paying more upfront, but you will not be paying for lawn mowers, edgers, fuel to run the equipment, fertilizer, not to mention the time you will save not having to spend the time upkeeping it on a regular basis.
  • Weed free: No weeds, no clover, no crab grass, no dandelions, no blackberries
  • Long lasting: Sod often needs to be reseeded or even replaced every few years to keep it full and fresh. Synthetic turf can last 15-20+ years so you aren’t replacing or reseeding every couple of years after heat waves or ice storms.
